are millenials owning laserdiscs in 2020 the equivalent to boomers owning vinyl players in 1990

the difference is LDs are very unlikely to come back, there were still vinyl pressing plants deep into the 90s, the records just became very expensive and hard to get (and were mostly sold to DJs)

can i talk about audio shit here or is this a video centric thread

Go ahead dood. I have a crappy turntable, a LOT of radios, and that’s it. I want to get a decent tape player. Timemom wants to buy me a reel to reel player, which is one thing MCX has put his foot down and said NO to me about. 8 tracks suck, btw.

do 8 tracks suck? why? serious question

Yeah, they do, for a variety of reasons. Audio quality is crap and the tapes sometimes lock or just skip. You can’t fix it by winding it with a pencil like you can with a compact cassette - I’m honestly not sure how to fix it.

That being said if by some freakish coincidence I found a box full of 8 track radio recordings I wouldn’t turn up my nose at it.

In fact vinyl LPs are still produced in small quantities and you can even have custom pressings made for a fee (not that crazy of a fee from my research)

I mean

LPs are very easy to get today and nearly all major releases in the US, Europe, and Japan are on them

The LD pressing plants are all closed as of at least 2006, it was retired as a format in 2000

yeah theres a pretty good sized market for video game music bootlegs that are done this way.

ive got a handful of lathe cut bootleg LPs that people do themselves to sell and they own

I am considering getting some similar lathe cut vinyls what service do you use

i just follow a million people on instagram who start stores, do one or two runs, decide its too much effort, and quit

same for bootleg anime/game cassettes and stupid anime stickers

Isn’t Kpop on vinyl for western fans?

You could also just spend a lot of more money and collect DPRK vinyl…

薔薇は美しく散る

you might want to be careful if you try to run Kpop. even something as low key as a mechanical keyboard keyset for BLINK (before the covid WFH blow up in the community) got a C&D so i imagine selling their actual music would get one too

The OJ way™

that said i havent really put much effort into looking for new shops since covid happened and a lot of these people just immediately closed up shop after losing their jobs and not being able to support their hobby shops anymore

its entirely a possibility theres already a community that does kpop bootlegs thats popped up during all this mess that ive missed entirely. i would be interested though

TimeLady Victorious changed the thread title from so I finally bought a laserdisc player to threadzone vintage a/v thread.

theoretically you can still make a CD size laserdisc

i have no idea how to trick a CD burner into writing analog video but i think a 5 min laserdisc made in tyol 2021 would be vaporwave as fuck

i did some poking around with CD burner drivers but afaik they all operate on a higher level concept of tracks and stuff. i don’t think it would be possible just to burn a chunk of data that happens to work but idk maybe it is. i think you’d need to modify the hardware

It’s one of those things that’s vaguely possible but not realistic unless you have CD burning hardware and software that was used in like 1984. It should be stated that LD-Rs existed, but were pretty rare - the major formats of recordings were incompatible IIRC, and there seems to have been only one brand of recorder that burned straight to LDs that could be readable in most standard players.

Honestly I’m hoping for more people to build Domesday machines and capture content off of LDs that way.

This guy has done Daicon IV, and is working on Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

He says the entire series is projected to be somewhere around 12 TB in size once done.

https://www.reddit.com/r/logh/comments/kyrus0/i_am_excited_to_announce_legend_of_the_galactic/

Further edit: I’m watching DVHS tapes and the player doesn’t seem to have a FireWire port at that back to move recordings off and on like you could with a tape drive. It’s programs recorded in DVHS mode, and I hope they don’t have the “write once, watch once” flag put on them, because I’m not capturing them right now! I’m watching what seems to be a bunch of music videos recorded off TV Asahi in 2002.

Picked up this set of sony stuff from fb marketplace for $160 all in.

Tuner doesn’t work but I think its due to the fact that one of the pins on the proprietary ribbon cable is broken. All the components connect via these cables for power. Turntable works though and speakers sound good enough (I’m no audiophile)

image.png

My setup is not at all as nice as that. I have 2 bookshelf speakers and that’s about it. The speakers are pretty good, not audiophile good but surface good.

you are literally my dad lmfao

What’s that sonny? Do you want grandma to give you a candy from her purse?

like the only reason i know about reel-to-reels, laserdiscs, etc is because all my dad did was buy old electronics and try to flip them on ebay lmao

he mostly went for antique radios but anything was fair game. its just kinda funny to see it come up somewhere else

I miss this radio - it was my grandfather’s, and he used to listen to baseball and football games on it, and I got it in my late teens after my grandmother stopped using it. This isn’t the picture of the actual radio - a friend of mine accidentally broke it beyond repair.

Have you tried replacing the tubes? You’ll need a variac, a tube tester, and a model of the layout inside.

https://www.circuitspecialists.com/blog/using-a-variac-to-power-up-an-old-radio-or-amplifier/

The limit of my know-how is that, if it needs to be soldered I couldn’t do it besides encouraging you to find good tin-lead solder (called “silver solder”)

Replacing tubes or reworking the components is something that I can handle, but that’s not going to help it. My friend was borrowing it because the radio had a phono jack on the back and could act as an amp for a turntable. He had a pipe burst and flood the room the radio was in. It was a complete shitshow.

There seems to have been a whole genre of Japanese home video that actually that. NEC put out at least a dozen MUSE LDs that were basically aquarium footage.

Is there a series name to lookup there? Might have to start scraping private torrent sites to see what’s out there and what’s missing.

List of MUSE LDs: https://www.lddb.com/list.php?format=ld&list=muse

The specific name of the series was “NEC Fish Club.” Honestly if I had the money to buy a MUSE player and MUSE LDs I’d probably just buy the nature documentaries instead of the extremely expensive movies, except for Terminator 2 which is the movie everyone who gets into MUSE LD has (one of the movies given away with players in the extremely limited North American release of the format)

Thinkin about doing something really stupid and spending a bunch of money on eBay buying matching mid 80s JVC stuff. Probably an XL-Z444 CD player and a KD-VR320 tape deck from my very light looking before I started getting ready for bed. Didn’t get to look for an era appropriate turntable

Might as well post this in here so i can get opinions on how y’all think it’d look together

Open to suggestions for turntable that will fit in good
